The closest desert-like area to Marrakech is Agafay, a rocky desert landscape located about an hour's drive away. While it doesn't have the traditional sand dunes, its barren, moon-like terrain offers a desert experience with activities like quad biking, camel rides, and overnight stays in luxury camps. For the classic sand dunes, Zagora is a closer option than Merzouga, but still requires a longer drive or multi-day tour.

Just pack a small backpack with what you'll need for the night in the desert. If you're not going for the luxury tent option, you might want to bring your own towel. Long pants are a must for camel riding—they'll keep you comfy and prevent chafing. Also, remember your hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen for the day, and comfortable shoes are a must.
