We will begin our journey from Marrakech to the blue city at 8:00 am from your hotel or Riad. Passing through the High Atlas (2260m high), we will make several stops for photos along the way, with a significant stop at Ait Benhaddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its appearances in famous movies such as Game of Thrones and Gladiator. We will enjoy lunch in this picturesque village.
Next, we will visit the Taourirt Kasbah in Ouarzazate, another historical monument, before continuing to explore the beautiful natural landscapes of the Valley of the Roses, renowned for its annual Rose Festival. We will pass through the Berber villages of Kelaa de M'Gouna and Boulmane Dades along the Valley, where we will spend the night.
After breakfast in Boulmane Dades, we will head to Merzouga, passing through the Berber village of Tinghir and the Todra Gorges, where towering canyons dominate the horizon. Along the route, we will stop at various villages, and for lunch, we will have a choice between Tinjdad or Rissani in the Tafilalet region, famous for its Berber pizza.
In the afternoon, we will reach Merzouga to embark on an adventure in Morocco's most popular desert, Erg Chebbi. After a brief rest and tea, we will commence a camel ride that will take us to a nomadic camp nestled amidst the highest sand dunes in North Africa. The camp offers comfortable tents with mattresses and bedding, a restaurant, a kitchen, and toilet facilities. In the evening, we will enjoy dinner and music around the campfire, followed by a memorable night's sleep in the Merzouga desert.
We will wake up early to witness the breathtaking sunrise over the desert, followed by a camel ride. After refreshing and having breakfast, we will leave Erg Chebbi and head north, passing through the Ziz Valley and the Middle Atlas Mountains towards Fez. Along the way, we will make frequent stops to admire the rocky mountains and expansive plains. One of the stops will be in Azrou, where we can observe North African monkeys in their natural habitat within a cedar forest. Eventually, we will arrive in Fez to spend the night.
On the fourth day of the desert excursion from Marrakech to Chefchaouen, you have the option to explore Fez, one of the oldest cities in Morocco, with a private tour guided by a local expert. Known as the "Athens of Africa," Fez boasts a rich cultural, religious, and educational heritage.
If you choose this option, your day will unfold by starting with a visit to the grand esplanade of the Royal Palace, showcasing its magnificent architecture. Then, you will proceed to the 16th-century Borj Sud, offering a stunning panoramic view of the walled city. Your journey will continue through the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Medina, where you will wander through narrow alleys, enchanting bazaars, ancient Quranic schools (madrasas), and picturesque shrines. Exploring bustling Nejjarine Square and the Dar Batha Museum, displaying exquisite Moroccan art, will also be part of the experience. After completing the city tour, you will return to your hotel or Riad and have the rest of the evening to yourself.
Following breakfast at your Riad, we will cross the Saiss Plain to reach the archaeological site of Volubilis, a significant UNESCO World Heritage Site in Morocco. Spanning an area of 42 hectares, this site showcases the urban development at the borders of the Roman Empire and exhibits numerous artistic materials such as mosaics, marble, and bronze sculptures. It holds historical importance for various civilizations, including the Libico-Berber, Mauritanian, Roman, Christian, and Arab-Islamic cultures. We head to Chefchaouen to spend the night.
After breakfast, you will have the opportunity to explore the simple yet beautiful city of Chefchaouen, renowned for its blue-dyed houses and picturesque cobbled streets against the backdrop of the mountains. Don't miss the chance to visit Uta El Hammam Square, where the Kasbah is located, and enjoy tea or even lunch in this charming setting. The visit to the blue city will undoubtedly leave you amazed.
From Chefchaouen, we will head to Casablanca. Alternatively, if you prefer, you can choose to conclude your desert excursion in Marrakech or any other city located along the route from Chefchaouen to Marrakech.
